How this calculation works

Feed is priced per ton, so the first step is converting your usage to tons. Everything after that is division.

  • Tons used = feed used in lb ÷ 2,000
  • Total feed cost = tons used × price per ton
  • Cost per animal = total feed cost ÷ number of animals
  • Cost per animal per day = cost per animal ÷ days in period

What the result means

Total cost converts your feed use to tons and prices it at your delivered price per ton. Cost per animal per day is the figure to track against gain or production, because it is comparable between periods.

Common mistakes and assumptions

  • Entering a price that excludes freight when the feed is delivered.
  • Using bunk-loaded weights when you meant as-fed delivered weights.
  • Comparing cost per head per day across periods of different length without checking the days entered.

Worked example

A ration is delivered at $285 per ton. A pen of 180 head used 53,500 lb over 30 days.

  1. 153,500 lb ÷ 2,000 = 26.75 tons.
  2. 226.75 × $285 = $7,623.75 total feed cost.
  3. 3$7,623.75 ÷ 180 head = $42.35 per head for the period.
  4. 4$42.35 ÷ 30 days = $1.4118 per head per day.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the delivered price or the mill price?
Use the delivered price, including freight and any fuel surcharge. That is your real cost per ton, and freight can move it meaningfully on long hauls.
How do I handle a ration made from several ingredients?
Calculate a blended price per ton first — total cost of the batch divided by the batch weight in tons — then enter that figure here.
Why is cost per animal per day shown with four decimals?
Daily feed cost is often between one and three dollars, so rounding to cents hides real differences between rations. Extra decimals keep comparisons honest.
Can I use this for a full feeding period budget?
Yes. Enter projected feed use and days to get a forecast, then re-run it with actual disappearance at the end to see how close the plan was.
