Feed consumption is measured by disappearance: whatever you had, plus whatever arrived, minus whatever is left.
- Total consumed (lb) = starting feed + feed delivered − ending feed
- Average per day (lb) = total consumed ÷ days in period
- Per animal per day (lb) = average per day ÷ number of animals
- Tons are converted to pounds at 2,000 lb per ton before any division
What the result means
Consumption is measured by disappearance: what you started with, plus deliveries, minus what remains. Per animal per day divides that average by head count, so it reflects the group rather than any single animal.
Common mistakes and assumptions
- Mixing pounds and tons without using the unit selectors — everything is normalized to pounds first.
- Ignoring waste and shrink, which disappearance counts as consumption.
- Using a head count that changed part-way through the period.
Worked example
A backgrounding pen is fed for 30 days. The bin held 12,000 lb at the start, one 24-ton load was delivered, and 6,500 lb was left at the end for 180 head.
- 1Total consumed = 12,000 + 48,000 − 6,500 = 53,500 lb (26.75 tons).
- 2Average per day = 53,500 ÷ 30 = 1,783.33 lb per day for the pen.
- 3Per animal per day = 1,783.33 ÷ 180 = 9.91 lb per head per day.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this account for feed waste?
- No — disappearance includes waste, spillage, and shrink. If you need true intake, subtract an estimated waste percentage from the result, or weigh refusals and add them to your ending inventory.
- Can I mix pounds and tons?
- Pick one unit for the three inventory amounts. If a load was quoted in tons, multiply by 2,000 to enter it in pounds, or switch the unit selector to tons and convert your bin readings instead.
- What if animals were added or removed mid-period?
- Use an average head count for the period, or split the period into segments with a stable count and run each one separately. Head count changes are the biggest source of error in per-head numbers.
- Why is my ending inventory rejected?
- Ending feed cannot exceed starting feed plus deliveries — that would mean feed appeared from nowhere. Usually it means a delivery was missed or a bin estimate is off.
