What this calculator includes
What you enter
- Numerator (top number)
- Denominator (bottom number)
What you get back
- As a percent
- As a decimal
- Simplified fraction
How this calculation works
A fraction is a division problem. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, then multiply by 100 to express it per hundred — which is what “percent” means.
- Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator
- Percent = decimal × 100
- Simplify by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor
What the result means
The percent is the fraction scaled to a base of 100 — how many hundredths of the whole the part represents.
Common mistakes and assumptions
- Swapping numerator and denominator.
- Rounding repeating decimals too early.
- Forgetting results can exceed 100% for improper fractions.
Worked example
You scored 45 out of 60 on a test.
- 145 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
- 20.75 × 100 = 75%.
- 3The greatest common divisor of 45 and 60 is 15, so the fraction simplifies to 3/4.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a fraction to a percent?
- Divide the top number by the bottom number and multiply by 100. For 3/8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.
- What is 1/3 as a percent?
- About 33.33%. It repeats forever (33.333…%), so it is usually rounded to two decimal places.
- How do I find what percent X out of Y is?
- Treat it as the fraction X/Y. 18 out of 24 is 18 ÷ 24 = 0.75, or 75%.
- Can a fraction be more than 100%?
- Yes. An improper fraction such as 5/4 equals 1.25, or 125% — more than one whole.
- How do I go from a percent back to a fraction?
- Write the percent over 100 and simplify. 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.
